The fisherman’s shack and property was beautiful, very special space enclosed with trees and flowers, made with care. We shared the bed and our dog fit in her crate perfectly. Hosts were responsive and helpful! Also so close to town, and easy access to the 1.

Our stay at Roots End was so enjoyable. Very close to the Mendocino beach. We had the perfect set up. Picnic bench, trash can available, nice bathroom set up. FYI, leave your food in your car if you’re going somewhere; we had a critter go through some of our trash and food left out in the picnic table.

Root's End Tent Site
Be sure to use the provided GPS coordinates to find the right driveway! The street address will get you close enough, but the number you're looking for is hidden behind another mailbox. It feels a little weird effectively driving deep into someone's back yard, but the campsite is set off a good distance and the landscaping partitions it well. It's still a lot more private than most public campgrounds.
The firepit is cleverly set up with a removable makeshift grill, wood is provided nearby, and I'm being completely serious when I say that the composting toilet is the classiest outhouse I've ever used. And while I did, my wife snuck a look at some of the host's other sites and said that they definitely look worth visiting too.
The walk into Mendocino is nice and takes just under half an hour. It's worth noting that Little Lake Road isn't flat and there's no sidewalk, but we managed fine with a stroller.

Owner was very easy to communicate with! Beautiful property however we stayed in our van instead of the fisherman’s home that we rented. We were unaware it was not a completely sealed space and there was a significant draft even with proper bedding. Restroom/ outhouse was impossible to get to as the lights strung were not on. Would return and stay in van on tent site but not in the fisherman’s shack. Beautiful shack but not equipped for windy or chilly nights regardless of bedding. Very drafty.

Overall great experience - the location was amazing. Mendocino is a gem! The cabin was perfectly secluded behind lots of trees and shrubbery, but we could still hear other campers from our site. The cabin and bathroom was tidy. There was no heating inside, so a bit chilly. Had to bring our own linens, cooking supplies, etc. There was cut firewood to use in the pit outside. All in all comfortable stay, but I don’t think it warrants the price tag for what’s offered as far as glamping accommodation goes.

One of my favorite hip camps! Very convenient and close to town but still feels like you’re in the middle of the forest. Molly the host is also really nice and welcoming. Will be back next time!

This was a nice clean campsite in the woods with trash can and firewood. Unfortunately, firewood was too wet to use. I would consider staying again, but the price just felt a bit high for camping. Very convenient to town.

This spot is slightly more exposed than the tent site, which makes sense since you can drive your camper right in! It's well maintained and still fairly private as you face into the wooded area. Loved the fire pits and the peaceful vibe!

Lovely private spot with a lot of tree coverage. This is probably the most private spot of the camp sites with the Fisherman's shack being the second most private. We loved falling asleep to the sound of the ocean, our stay was great!

We loved our stay amongst the redwoods! We would absolutely stay again. The tiny house is comfortable and the kitchenette well-stocked with dining ware and tools for cooking. We loved the string lights. The only thing to note is that the tiny house is very close to the main house and there is very little privacy.

This was our 2nd time staying here. It was a wet weekend that kept others away so felt very private. Listen to the ocean in the background. Relax in the trees. Appreciate having a trash can--as I mentioned last time, it's amazing how hard it is to find a place to deposit your trash in the area. Love the outdoor compost toilet. And the proximity to Big River and nearby hiking and mountain biking.

Beautiful little spot! And surprisingly insulated, especially during the winter! The camp came with free fire wood, and the bathroom was very clean. Highly recommend!!!

Our family celebrated Thanksgiving at the Roots End Tiny Cabin in Mendocino, and it was an experience we’ll always cherish.
The cabin’s location was perfect—secluded yet close to the town and beach. It was cozy but spacious enough for our family of four (including a 9- and 16-year-old). The well-equipped kitchenette and comfortable sleeping setup were great, though I’d recommend bringing sleeping bags as it gets chilly at night.
Cooking over the fire pit made our Thanksgiving meal extra special, and the propane range was perfect for morning coffee. The outdoor space, lit with patio lights, was charming, though the pit toilet took a little getting used to.
For a unique holiday or peaceful family getaway, the Roots End Tiny Cabin is an amazing choice!
Tips for Traveling to Mendocino During the Holidays:
- Plan your itinerary and pre-book rides at least a week in advance, as availability can be limited.
- Call ahead to reserve tables at Mendocino’s quaint restaurants—they’re lovely but have limited seating.
- Don’t miss dining at The Waiting Room; the hospitality and ambiance are incredible!
- Stop by Goodlife Cafe—the food, service, and ambiance are amazing! It can get crowded quickly, so plan ahead—or don’t—but it’s worth the wait!

Beautiful site surrounded by redwoods! Host was responsive and insightful with all questions and help we needed. We’d definitely stay here again, though not during rainy season.
It was very close to the other sites but luckily no one else was staying at the tent site. Important note that I didn’t realize: this site shared a toilet with the neighboring tent site.

Molly was super responsive and helpful and the property descriptions were accurate and worked for our needs. Sink, stove, refrigerator, and shower in the tiny home were nice glamping perks. The shack was a cool little shelter with its own super private fire pit and table area. The outhouses were clean and stocked with the necessities.
I rented both the Tiny House and the Fisherman's Shack, which were adjacent and only about 20 paces from each other. As a result, it felt like we had a large yard area to ourselves, which was fun for our kids.
Both sites are within view of Molly's home and within 50-100 yards of the other sites on the property. Loved how close the whole property was to downtown Mendocino (about a mile, just across the highway), which made for easy exploring of the area.

Tiny House Among the Redwoods
The tiny house among the redwoods was a cute small cabin. It fit my family of four just fine. Packed with all the necessities, we had a good stay. Molly was very kind and warm. My only complaint is the lack of privacy. There isn’t much. It’s fairly close to the rest of the sites and the main House. But if that doesn’t bother you make sure to check this one out. It’s literally about 3-5 minutes away from the Big River which was absolutely majestic!
