We loved Boulderdash so much! It’s so quiet and peaceful. The water was perfect for the kids. The bathrooms were beautiful and clean. There was shade in all of the spots. We loved it so much we booked our next trip back while we were still there!

Boulderdash is a fantastic getaway. The hosts are just wonderful and so helpful. They have a little store where they stock ice and other stuff for sale. Carol-Anne and Lyn were incredible host and went out of their way to make us feel welcome and at home. The campground was a really sweet layout with great views, close to the water and awesome amenities. Would be an especially great spot for a big group camp

2 nights at Sparrow Bend River Retreat

Absolutely amazing! I've been coming to the area (mainly Frio River) my entire life and this place might be my favorite place I've been! We stayed in campsite #3 and it was perfect. Plenty of room between other campsites. Very clean and had a fire pit area with a picnic table. Deer came to eat every morning and evening. We saw turkey as well. Went fishing and caught bass, catfish, gar, soft shell turtle and about a million perch! Water was low, but still had the perfect amount for swimming and cooling off. Indoor bathrooms with AC is a major bonus! The cabins on the property looked great from the outside. Truly worth every penny, we'll be coming back! Easy access into the gated property, which made us feel safe knowing our stuff was safe when we left to go to town. Can't say enough good things!

Camping spot was great! Tried to get a river spot first, but they were all booked up. Glad we ended up a Forest 1 because of the shade and close to bathrooms. Only about a 3 minute walk to the river. River was super fun. Also, short drive to Bandera which was a really cute town. Plan on returning in the future!

Beautiful area close to tubing rivers, New Braunfels and Gruene . The Swimming hole was the highlight for us ! Great camping spot ! The hosts were great , making sure our stay went well. Felt very safe as the property is gated. Surprisingly very little bugs/mosquitos in area where we camped

This is my favorite getaway whenever I need a break from city life. I love the peaceful atmosphere, the beautiful waterfall, and the serene river. The host is always kind and consistently goes above and beyond to ensure we have a perfect stay every time.

My family love our get away trip. The camp grounds were clean and the staff was very responsive if you needed anything. We went for Memorial Day weekend and while others were fighting for space to set up and hit the water. The camp grounds were spacious and other guests were quiet and respectful. Beautiful sights from the communal observation deck. We will be returning in the future.

The vibes were great, especially when the sun starts to go down, the lights and everything were just great. I’d definitely see me and my partner coming here again, it was a great and comfortable experience nestled in the hills.

Weekend Trip to Memmie’s Farm

The two camping sites near the river (Medina and Riverside) were perfect for our group! Ellie’s property was lovely, secluded, and peaceful. Lots of deer, and hummingbirds! A short walking distance from the river, which was flowing great. It was wonderful to have the clean, well-kept outhouse for our 4 day visit, along with blocks for our fire and a trash barrel. Ellie was very friendly, respectful of our space, and attentive- with very clear instructions. We will be visiting again! Thank you Memmie’s Farm!

Sparrow Bend Retreat was the perfect camping getaway. Our spot was the closest to the river and we loved the short walk on a hot day. Bathrooms weren’t too far either. Definitely bring your own shade for this site as there is none. The owners are extremely nice and responsive.

This place is absolutely gorgeous with epic swimming. You do need to haul your stuff pretty far and down/up hills, but it was just a good workout for some really great camping. 🤣 There were some hiccups with the app and check in, but everything turned out great. Don't forget to bring lonnnnnngggg extension cords to access the electricity at night.

Pedernales Falls State Park is only 35 miles away. Swimming at holes, horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, and birding are a few of the quintessential outdoor Texan activities visitors enjoy most at Pedernales State Park, located near the area of Texas Hill Country where former President Lyndon B. Johnson grew up. Next to the famed Pedernales River, the park is an hour west of Austin, an hour east of Fredericksburg, and about 20 minutes from downtown Johnson City. Each of these sites requires a walk of at least 50' from your vehicle to the fire ring. Site 13 is only for backpackers or people willing to hike about 500 yards to the campsite over rough terrain. There is no way to drive to it or even get close except on foot. But it is spectacular and beautiful! Only three sites can accommodate a smaller trailer or camper. Site 1, Site 2, and site 6. Please notify me in your booking if you intend to bring a camper and I can accommodate you. We practice leave-no-trace as much as possible. So please pack out anything you pack in. You are responsible for removing all trash. If any garbage is left behind in your site you will be billed for the cleanup. We have a dumpster located near the front gate. Please use it and put all your trash in there. Heads-up! We have a small farm on the property. Dogs are always welcome and we LOVE our furry friends! Group camping options are available within the park, as well. Or travel to Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch and experience a drive-through safari park on an unforgettable wildlife experience. For those seeking a coastal camping experience, area Hipcamps offers waterfront campsites and opportunities for fishing and hiking around Medina River.

Where to go

Brackenridge Park

Occupying some of the most historically-rich land in San Antonio, Brackenridge Park offers a wealth of activities. Explore the park's scenic trails—on a hike or a bike. Campers can also immerse themselves in the lush botanical gardens, teeming with vibrant flora and fauna. Nearby sits the famous San Antonio Zoo, home to a diverse range of animal species. Relax by the serene river, enjoy a picnic, or partake in fishing and kayaking. Camping directly on-site is prohibited, but campsites across town make it easy to settle back to a pull-through RV site, cabin, or tent.

Government Canyon State Natural Area

Embark on scenic hiking trails that wind through diverse terrain on a trip to Government Canyon State Natural Area. Discover fascinating geological formations, dense woodlands, and vibrant wildflowers that are native to the area. Then, explore the park's extensive network of biking and equestrian trails, or engage in wildlife viewing and birdwatching. For an adrenaline rush, try geocaching, or take it slower in a guided interpretive program. The natural area also provides 23 walk-in tent campsites as well as two walk-in group tent campsites. However, campgrounds in the area are only open on Friday and Saturdays.

Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch

Just outside the city lies Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch, which campers can experience from the comfort of their vehicles (or via guided tours). Explore the vast wildlife area, and encounter a variety of exotic and native animals in their natural habitats. The ranch also provides picnic tables and areas where visitors can relax and eat. Then, drive back to nearby campsites and RV parks with hot showers, compostable toilets, wifi, and potable water.

When to go

In spring, campers can enjoy San Antonio’s pleasant temperatures and blooming wildflowers, making it an ideal time for hiking, biking, and wildlife spotting. Summer brings hot and humid temperatures ranging from 80–100°F. Fall offers milder temperatures in the 70s to 80s. It also marks the fishing season in the area. Winter brings cooler weather, but it's still suitable for hiking and camping with average temperatures around 60°F.
