Bakers Akers is located in what used to be Nebblett, New Mexico but is now Virden, New Mexico. The one room Nebblett school house was located on this property. Virden was settled by the Mormons when they were ran out of old Mexico by Poncho Villa. Kit Carson took this route guiding General Kearney and the Army of the west to California during the Mexican American war. It is now being discussed that Coronado may have come through this area also. The farm was used for breeding and training race horses. It is now a cow/calf operation. Overview

About

Imagine cowboys riding horseback and corralling cattle at this state park 5 miles south of Safford. This lake is just 32 acres, but it's prime real estate for getting away from it all. The surrounding desert hillsides offer places to explore and view the lake from above.

Dankworth Pond offers a unique way to relax after an active day on this former ranch. Check out the natural stone hot tub. The circular stone allows for several people to sit in the tub at once. Quiet afternoons or evenings offer a romantic setting.

Use the campgrounds at this lake as a base of operations for further exploring. Put in your small boat to catch bass or trout. Hike from here to Mount Graham off in the distance for high adventure among the Sky Islands. Guided bird hikes put you up close to native desert birds.
