Stay on the flank of Sleeping Ute Mountain in historic McElmo Canyon just 40 minutes from Mesa Verde and 20 minutes from the town of Cortez. Our property features red rock cliff walls, a private rock alcove, comfortable amenities, internet, and sweeping mountain views. A perfect place to base yourself for your next creative endeavor or for rejuvenating and exploring in the wilds of the four corners. Head just 10 minutes down canyon to Sand Canyon—public access to Canyons of the Ancients National Monument—for hiking and mountain biking trails. Further down Road G is Hovenweep National Monument where you can view Pueblo ruins precariously built on top of boulders and canyon rims. At the end of the day, stop by our neighbor Sutcliffe Vineyards for year-round local wine tasting. Nearby - Telluride (2), Cedar Mesa and Monument Valley (1.5-2), the Four Corners Monument (45), Durango (1.25), Shiprock (45), Mesa Verde (40), Cortez (20), Hovenweep (45).

Stay on the flank of Sleeping Ute Mountain in historic McElmo Canyon just 40 minutes from Mesa Verde and 20 minutes from the town of Cortez. The Cliff House is built right into the red rock cliff wall of a private red rock canyon alcove with comfortable amenities, internet, and sweeping views down canyon. A perfect place to base yourself for your next creative endeavor or for exploring in the wilds of the four corners. In addition to being built into sandstone rock, the Cliff House is landscaped with native species that bloom all summer. Around the corner from the house, in another rock alcove, is a little lawn. Enjoy comfortable porch seating with a stunning view. We purposefully do not provide a TV and hope our space is a nature-inspired respite. That said, we also know you might want to get away and retreat to the Cliff House in order to do some work in-between exploring the Southwest. We have fast, broadband wireless internet with Eero WiFi. Stream music to our Apple HomePod with your iPhone or AirPlay-enabled device. We have a network extender for strong Verizon LTE service. **Guest Access** You will have access to our entire cabin home, carport, and a secluded yard inside a beautiful rock alcove on our property. The Ladder Alcove and lawn are a shared space with ourselves, our dog, and guests from our Workshop Loft, but in general it is a very private space. **Other Notes** A few notes to make sure this is the right place for you: The property is located down a single-lane, dirt road. It is safe for passenger cars, but drive slowly and watch for critters wild and domestic. Part of the road goes through open range and you sometimes have to patiently wait for cows or horses to move aside (particularly in the winter months). We are located in a desert, rural area. Expect wildlife on the property (insects, geckos, foxes, deer, marmots, bobcats, mountain lions, and other fun critters). While the house is weather-tight, insects can and do get into the cabin. If the presence of insects might cause you undue concern or discomfort, this might not be the spot for you. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us before booking. The Workshop Loft is a new build completed in the Summer of 2021. A converted former barn workshop, the Loft sits below red rock cliffs with high-end amenities, great internet, a private patio, and gorgeous river-bottom cottonwood views. A perfect place to base yourself for your next creative endeavor or for exploring in the wilds of the Four Corners. The Workshop Loft is a converted cabin workshop that fills the west side of a large barn in the creek bottoms on the banks of McElmo. Completed in the Summer of 2021, the Loft boasts high-end, comfortable appliances, a full, well-equipped kitchen, two bathrooms and a large, luxurious shower, washer and dryer, high-speed internet, a comfortable bed, and midcentury-southwest inspired aesthetic. The barn sits down a hill under the shade of a large tree, but has impressive red rock views out the bedroom and back of the house. In addition to the comfortable living space, the Loft has a small private patio with a barbecue, an outdoor dining table, and solar string lights. Just up the hill from the loft, in a red rock alcove, is a little lawn with even more magnificent views. We purposefully do not provide a TV and hope our space is a nature-inspired respite. Workshop Loft

We had an incredible time here and will rebook whenever we are in the area! The loft is spotlessly clean, incredibly modern and so, so comfortable! It has everything you could need for your stay, from cooking and baking items, oils and spices, a big supply of towels, excellent wifi, and a great guide to nearby food and activities. We stayed in July and greatly appreciated the air conditioner and freezer stocked with ice, but it would be perfect any time of year. The night skies are absolutely amazing, sand canyon is just down the road for some lovely hiking, and the property itself is lovely.

Cliff House

Really beautiful land and house. This part of the country is magical, especially in the spring. Close to Canyons of the Ancients, Mesa Verde, and Hovenweep. Canyons of the Ancients is a National Audubon Society Important Bird Area for all of your birders out there.

LOVED the location & house

We loved staying here! The property was amazing and the cliff house was beautiful! The bed was comfortable (we stayed in the loft) and we got some of the best rest we had gotten in months. Cannot recommend it enough. Grant and Laura were very communicative and quick to answer. We were told that cameras were on the outside of the property which is totally understandable considering the location, however, we were surprised to see that one of the cameras pointed at the entrance of the home and by default, the outside patio, which felt a bit weird to us since the view of the porch is a huge selling point to the property. If you are a cocktail lover, I would recommend bringing your own cocktail shaker. LOL.

Magical place

Cliff House

Wow! This place is amazing. I’m so jealous that I don’t own this as my own private retreat. The land is absolutely magical and there is a lot of history on and around the property. This space feels very sacred so only book a stay here if you plan to have a relaxing time and can respect the land. You can tell that the owners take pride in this property and we are lucky that they are willing to share this space. I will definitely be staying here again!

Wonderful, remote location

Cliff House

This house is lovely. It really looks like the photos and is one-of-a-kind architecturally. The property is pretty remote, which can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on what you're hoping for. First you'll drive out of town, then hit a long gravel road to their gated community before finally heading to their private driveway. That makes it great for quiet and solitude but not convenient if your intention is to head into town for restaurants, etc. Thankfully the kitchen is VERY well equipped (probably the best of any rental I've ever stayed at, anywhere). The house has wi-fi, but no cell signal. Strong air conditioning, too! DO be aware that the bed is in a loft that requires you to climb a ladder, unless you sleep on the pull-out couch in the living room. I was unaware of this, but we are able-bodies so it was no big deal. For others, this is worth noting. We enjoyed walking the property and exploring the mesa top. There are cool rock formations, some petroglyphs, and a tipi that worked great for my hot yoga. Unfortunately, it poured rain both nights we were there so my hopes of stargazing were cancelled (but on clear nights, the location would be stunning). It's less than a 15 minute drive to the Sand Canyon trails at Canyon of the Ancients - this was the highlight of our trip to Cortez and absolutely must-see if you like to hike. It's about 35 minutes to the entrance of Mesa Verde, but the cliff ruins are another 45 minutes inside the park, so a long day. Honestly, we were disappointed by Mesa Verde. Live and learn. The hosts left a nice booklet of other things to do in the area, but in my opinion, activities that are a 1-2 hour drive away (each way) aren't "nearby". So, plan the number of nights you stay here based on your driving tolerance!

A dream

Cliff House

Sage Canyon and this cabin nested in the cliff rocks felt like a peaceful and gorgeous piece of paradise. I'm so happy having been able to experience a few days there and would come back in a heartbeat. Thank you Grant and Laura for your work on the cabin, the little touches and all the comfort that come with it. Unforgettable!
