A family-run, eco-friendly glamping site set in 25 acres of woodland on the beautiful Welsh borders

As any good nursery school teacher will tell you, the easiest way to tell the age of a tree is to keep walking until you can put your hands on your knees, peer back, upside down, through your legs and see the very top of the branches in the distance. The number of paces you have to walk is the amount of years that tree has grown. It’s a crude method, but few things will delight you more than seeing a forest full of kiddies, bobbing up and down, pacing around and ducking their heads between their legs like a field of clumsy, oversized chickens. At Redwood Valley, they’d have to walk a long, long way.

Deep in the wilds of the Welsh border, this secluded haven is home to such vast, mature trees that you can’t help but lose time simply enthralled by them. At its heart is the giant redwood that gives this campsite its name, a tall grandfather of the forest, with its distinctive auburn bark. Even the campsite’s rope-swing has to do that bit extra to fit in – the rope from branch to swing is about 20ft long!

Snuggled among it all, Redwood Valley is a site with a clear affinity with its surroundings. With just two yurts and a woodland cabin, effortlessly blended in among the forest backdrop, the place is quiet, unobtrusive and effortlessly charming. The more curvaceously roofed of the two yurts (built in the Turkmen style) has wonderful steam-bent wooden latticework inside and simple yet extremely comfortable furnishings. The second, Mongolian-style structure has a little more flair than its partner; the door and interior woodwork are hand-painted in a decorative, traditional style, and extra furnishings, like fairy lights, add to the magical feel. The separate, stilted cabin is perched high on the slope overlooking the brook, giving it a treehouse-like feel. From its balcony, you feel almost a part of the canopy, alone among the birds, while four floor-to-ceiling windows constantly bring the outside in. Lovingly crafted out of timber from the valley, it seems to melt from view, offering complete privacy.

All three structures benefit from a snug wood-burning stove inside and a firepit-cum-BBQ outside. Campfire cooking, though, is a primitive choice in comparison to the wooden kitchen lodge, which has an almost Scandinavian feel. Set into a bank with trees all around, it features fridges, hobs and everything you’d expect of most holidayhome kitchens, transplanted to this breathtakingly wild setting – a truly special place in which to prepare your supper. The same building houses an excellent gas-powered shower, while a long, hand-crafted table allows for a leisurely feast as the sun disappears beneath the tree tops.

Elsewhere, there is plenty to do nearby. The bustling town of Presteigne, renowned Hay-on-Wye and historic Ludlow Castle, are all a short drive away but the biggest rewards are still far closer to home. It’s the simple pleasures at Redwood Valley that make it such a special place. Dabble in the tiny brook or walk the pair of nature trails that dip in and out of the trees. Or why not explore two countries for the price of one and trek across the border into England… it’s only a few hundred meters away.

Treetop Cabin

100% (2)
Treehouse · Sleeps 3
Our Treetop Cabin is a very special haven. Its magnificent position, perched high on a wooded slope overlooking the valley, means that guests can enjoy spectacular views and complete privacy. From inside, the large windows allow a stunning panorama of the woodland canopy allowing you to enjoy the abundance of nature in total comfort. Relaxing in the hammock on the balcony, the only sound is the chattering of birds and the babbling of the brook far below. The cabin has been lovingly crafted from wood from the valley. There is a large balcony with chairs and hammock, and a wooden walkway to a luxurious private composting loo. The cabin is furnished with a double bed (with cosy down duvet, pillows and crisp white bedlinen) and a daybed which can comfortably sleep one additional adult or child. We also provide a small fridge, tea and coffee making facilities, a wind up lantern, and wood for the log burning stove. Outside there is a spring water tap, and in the wooded glade behind the cabin is a seating area where you can enjoy the BBQ which doubles as a fire pit.

1 - Seren Yurt

Booked 11 times
Yurt · Sleeps 5
Nestled in amongst the trees, each yurt offers a private and secluded space in which to relax and enjoy the view across the valley to our redwood and the brook. Seren Yurt is a Turkmen bentwood yurt made from locally-sourced ash by Henry Dowell. The bentwood yurt gets it name from the distinctive steam-bent ends to the roof poles. The structure is lighter than our ger but equally beautiful and romantic, and its elegant structure is reflected in simple wooden furnishings. Both yurts are comfortably furnished with a mixture of handmade and vintage furniture, as well as a single and double futon each. The king size beds were made by us here at Redwood Valley and chairs were handmade by our greenwood working teacher Ben Willis. The yurts are also equipped with down duvets and pillows, electric bedside lights, wind up lanterns, and a log burning stove to ensure that you remain cosy, even on those chiller nights. Each yurt is set on raised platform with a spiralling, seashell-like lower platform where you can sit and gaze out over the meadow or up at the star-filled sky with no light pollution to interfere. Outside, you will find your own spring water tap, BBQ (which doubles as a fire pit), table and stools. N.B: We have a minimum stay of 2 nights, however, single night bookings are available on occasion. Please contact us directly at enquiries@redwood-valley.co.uk to enquire about shorter stays.

Yurt · Sleeps 5
Nestled in amongst the trees, each yurt offers a private and secluded space in which to relax and enjoy the view across the valley to our redwood and the brook. Eilian is a traditional Mongolian ger, made in Mongolia, felt-lined for extra warmth, and beautifully handpainted. We have decorated the yurt to enhance and reflect the traditional style and with the log burner lit and the fairy lights on, it is absolutely magical. Both yurts are comfortably furnished with a mixture of handmade and vintage furniture, as well as a single and double futon each. The king size beds were made by us here at Redwood Valley and chairs were handmade by our greenwood working teacher Ben Willis. We are sure you are going to love it and look forward to welcoming you soon.
Nearby attractions

Under a mile from Redwood Valley, Presteigne is a thriving town with a wine bar, four pubs and an eclectic array of independent shops and eateries. For something more in keeping with the campsite setting, there's a fantastic farm park and owl sanctuary (01544 231109) also around a mile from Redwood Valley. Ludlow Castle (01584 874465) adds a little history, as well as its spectacular annual food festival, or try the renowned book town of Hay on Wye, full of fantastic independent shops, especially great for antiques and, well, books. The campsite is located in the heart of a dark sky reserve and if you want something more than the simple stargazing onsite, there is an observatory (01547 520247) just up the road in Knighton – so bring a telescope if you are a keen!

Food and drink

If you are cooking your own meals, Presteigne has an excellent greengrocer and fishmonger, a deli selling freshly baked bread, a local butcher, a wine shop and two small supermarkets. There are also four pubs – The Farmers Inn (01544 267389), The Salty Dog (01544 267720), The Radnorshire Arms (01544 267406) and The Royal Oak (01544 260842) – along with an excellent wine bar, Wine On Line (01544 267675).
