Camping and rustic glamping in a working boatyard with an exceptional waterside location on the Dyfi estuary

While other vessels at Smuggler’s Cove Boatyard come and go as easily as the tide, The Boy John and Hannah are permanently landed high and dry. This pair of boats, one a former fishing trawler the other a 32-foot yacht, offer places to stay that are as quirky as it gets. But it’s not only the accommodation that recommends a stay here; the ever-changing views across the Dyfi Estuary do that too. And those are shared with three secret camping pitches tucked 100 metres along a tree-backed footpath on the water's edge.

For years it was only boatmen who enjoyed this estuary location at the southern edge of Snowdonia National Park but now campers are as welcome as the sailors. Staying here, whether in a tent or rustic landed boat, is a truly unique experience. Beyond portholes and tent flaps is a scene that changes as much within the hour as most sites do across the season. Make a morning brew over the campfire as high tide laps just beyond your toes then watch as boats and water retreat. By lunchtime it's become a private beach, the water now a narrow channel that slithers through the sands while long-legged birds wade along its edges and ospreys soar overhead.

In fact, there’s a nature reserve, RSPB Ynys-hir on the opposite shore, so it’s no wonder the birdlife is abundant. If you’ve come with a kayak or canoe, you can paddle out into the water to try and get closer to the wildlife but, to reach the reserve, you'll need to take to dry land. It's a drive of 25 minutes, past Machynlleth, the nearest town. Alternatively, explore in the other direction to find nearby Aberdyfi or, inland, for Snowdonia's mighty peaks.

The lie of the land means that settlements, rail and road all hug the coast and you’re well aware of that here. Smuggler’s Cove Boatyard is just off an A-road and, as you walk from the car park, you pass beneath the Cambrian Railway. Throughout the day, the whoosh of a train every hour or two and the sound of passing traffic blend in with the tap, tap tapping of boatbuilders and the gentle dinging of rigging on masts. Serene as the view across the estuary is, this is not a silent spot and it’s not a purpose-built glamping site. The Boy John does not have a perfect paint job, The Hannah’s cooking equipment is just what you’d get at sea. But it's all this that makes Smuggler's Cove Boatyard an authentically interesting place to stay – with views that are hard to beat.

Dulas - Estuary view pitch

97% (15)
Tent pitch · Sleeps 5
Along a coastal footpath, Dulas, the middle one of three individual pitches, sits on a raised slate plateau beside the Dyfi’s banks, providing the ultimate waterside location and spectacular views. Separated from each other by shrubs, the pitches are tucked beneath trees, each with plenty of space, and their own firepit.  Enjoying uninterrupted views across the water to Ynyshir bird reserve, Ynyslas sand dunes and the National Nature Reserve of Borth Bog. Each pitch has been upgraded to a mix of a soft and comfortable wood chip base to put your tent on, and part grassy area. This reduces mud even in the worst weather. Dulas has the largest wood chip area, perfect for those with big tents! 7m wide by 4m deep. Placed under the spotlight thanks to the BBC's Hinterland (Y Gwyll in Welsh) and Springwatch TV programmes, the Dyfi UNESCO Biosphere Zone incorporates some of the most outstanding natural landscapes and habitats in the whole of Europe and Snowdonia National Park is one of only 18 International Dark Sky Reserves in the world. Your tent looks out onto a constantly changing vista: at low tide, sand and the river channel, marching geese and waders. We are 2 miles from nesting ospreys who fish in our water. At high tide, there's an expanse of water suitable for sailing, canoeing and swimming (please be aware of fast tides & currents). The pitches are accessed by a (90m) pathway from car park through a traditional working boatyard and then along a (100m) rugged slate coastal path (wheelbarrows provided!) which runs between the river and the treeline, beneath the embankment of the raised coastal road.  Please be aware of uneven ground along the route. Toilets, showers and washing up facilities are shared with other campers and located within the boatyard. Firewood can be purchased on site. Please note: The number of tents per pitch is restricted to one per booking. The Cambrian railway line runs through our property, along a raised embankment and disappearing into a tunnel deep in the hill behind our foreshore, the coastal A493 also runs above our property.  Most of our guests don't seem to mind this, but we just want to make you aware... SMUGGLERS COVE BOATYARD An unique spot on the stunning mid Wales coast... ...offering group accommodation, camping and glamping in a working boatyard with an exceptional location. This small, friendly boatyard on the Dyfi estuary, is located at an old slate works and quay in the Snowdonia National Park. The boatyard is run by Geoff, Ben, John & Liz with the boats moved and launched by boat builder Giles Thaxton. We have established a small, slightly eccentric, sustainable resource to be used by those interested in the outdoors. We have a slipway and boat hoist, moorings & hard standing for smaller boats, our own stretch of estuary foreshore, toilets, showers, washing up facilities, camping, glamping boats and holiday cottages. Located 3 miles upriver from Aberdyfi and on the A493. The Boy John - a converted beached boat that offers either a communal area for campers or quirky basic glamping accommodation...depending on your individual requirements, with outstanding views across the Dyfi estuary. Hannah - our newest boat, converted in 2021, an intimate, sympathetically repurposed wooden dream sits on the water's edge alongside The Boy John, perfect basic glamping accommodation for the sea leg-less sailor. Cottages - a unique self catering holiday cottage complex accommodating 14 people (18 using both available sofa beds). Ideal for family reunions, celebrations, special occasions and get togethers. The property consists of two closely adjacent buildings, Chapel House with five bedrooms & Quarry Cottage with two bedrooms. The properties are only available to rent together as a single holiday let. Boatyard - a small resource with slipway, moorings, winter storage and lifting, repair services etc. Located very near to Aberdyfi, the location is ideal for easy access to the numerous activities, attractions and beautiful surroundings of Snowdonia National Park, north and mid Wales. Please be aware Smuggler's Cove Boatyard is a working boatyard and therefore there will possibly be some noise such as clanking rigging and people working on their boats. Also it can get pretty windy and wild on the foreshore during stormy weather, and you are very close to the water, which can be exhilarating but is just something else to be aware of!

The Hannah

100% (18)
Quirky · Sleeps 2
The Hannah is a gorgeous 32ft mahogany Hillyard yacht that we have sympathetically converted into basic glamping accommodation and installed up on the shore, giving spectacular views... This unusual place to stay in the idyllic Dyfi valley offers tourists, mountain bikers, bird watchers, sailors, kayakers, walkers, stargazers, creatives, outdoor adventure enthusiasts and photographers alike a truly unique accommodation experience... Situated on the north side of the Dyfi valley estuary, The Hannah sits up on the shore of Smugglers Cove....a small working boatyard....with a little bit more to boot! Located with a south facing aspect between the water, a neighbouring glamping boat the 'Boy John', and the amazing Cambrian Coast railway line, The Hannah enjoys uninterrupted views across the water to Ynyshir bird reserve, Ynyslas sand dunes and the National Nature Reserve of Borth Bog. Placed under the spotlight thanks to the BBC's Hinterland (Y Gwyll) and Springwatch TV programmes, the Dyfi UNESCO Biosphere Zone incorporates some of the most outstanding natural landscapes and habitats in the whole of Europe and Snowdonia National Park is one of only 18 International Dark Sky Reserves in the world. There is a double bunk in the aft and twin bunks to the fore, with a very compact and cosy seating area/kitchen and a small wheelhouse/entryway with a view. We recommend occupancy of 2 adults, there are bunks for up to 4 people (1 double, 2 single), but the living area is small so we don't advertise it as officicially 4 person accommodation. It is NOT as big as The Boy John. You can bring 2 children along or squeeze in 4 adults, but don't try to add them when booking. Just search/ book for 2 adults, and let us know when you make your booking. Just get in touch if you are not sure... Please note the boat has low ceilings and narrow internal doors, and you have to duck down to get in the entrance! Amenities include a wood burning stove, mini two ring gas cooker with grill/oven, kettle, small sink, plug sockets, lights and even a record player/sound system! There are plenty of little built in shelves and cupboards for the stowing away of your belongings, as well as some storage boxes for food. There is a mini fridge outside, as the space is too small and curvy to squeeze it inside! There is a bench and small fire pit outside for your use.  Please bring your own bedding & towels etc.  The mattresses are foam with stiff covers. We would recommend camping bedding such as sleeping bags, if you wish to bring home style bedding like duvets then please be aware the double bunk is an unusual shape (large at on end than the other), so a fitted sheet won't work, it needs to be loose cover. Some wood is provided, more is available to purchase in advance as an extra, or on site.  The Hannah is unique accommodation, perfect for lovers of nature and rustic nautical adventure! Discounted rates for weekend breaks (3 nights) or mid week breaks (4 nights), and 7 day prices are available, please contact us directly. Please be aware Smuggler's Cove Boatyard is a working boatyard and therefore there will possibly be some noise such as clanking rigging and people working on or launching their boats. We also get the occasional group of Outward Bound students having canoeing lessons on the slipway! There can be moments of peace and tranquility but also hubbub and excitement :) The Cambrian railway line runs on a raised embankment through our boatyard, and the coastal A493 road passes above on the hill, separated from the site by trees and slate slopes...these don't seem to bother most of our campers, but we just want to make this clear. It can get pretty windy and wild on the foreshore during stormy weather, and you are very close to the water, which can be exciting but is just something else to be aware of! A polite reminder that this boat is an old sailing vessel, there are nooks and crannies, exposed wood, marks, scuffs and features from its life on the waves, and we have tried to keep its character and not turn it into a holiday cottage! The conversion is professional but simple and rustic, please don't expect a hotel standard of finish.

The Boy John

94% (9)
Quirky · Sleeps 2
The Boy John is a quirky glamping boat with basic facilities and outstanding views, set in one of the most sought after locations in mid Wales. Sympathetically converted from a fishing trawler, this unusual place to stay in the idyllic Dyfi valley offers tourists, mountain bikers, bird watchers, sailors, kayakers, walkers, stargazers, creatives, outdoor adventure enthusiasts and photographers alike a truly unique accommodation experience... Situated on the north side of the Dyfi valley estuary, The Boy John sits on the shore of Smugglers Cove....a small working boatyard....with a little bit more to boot! Located with a south facing aspect between the water and the amazing Cambrian Coast railway line, The Boy John enjoys uninterrupted views across the water to Ynyshir bird reserve, Ynyslas sand dunes and the National Nature Reserve of Borth Bog. The Boy John is 40’ long and 13’ wide, with good standing headroom. Entering through a door in the hull, the main living area has plenty of seating, dining table, wood burning stove, music system and even an upright piano. Some wood is provided and more can be purchased on site. To the fore is an adjoining galley/kitchen area with a two ring gas hob, sink, kettle, toaster and mini fridge. There is plenty of storage space in the pantry area behind the hob. Various pans, crockery and cutlery are provided. Beyond, the stern cabin has a small double/queen bed (foam mattress) and storage space, and is lined with boards that follow the lines of the hull, which gives it a real nautical feel. Please bring your own bedding & towels etc.   A short ladder takes you up into the wheelhouse, which has outstanding views across the estuary. The wheelhouse features a high bench style day bed. The perfect lookout spot for bird watching, reading, or evening drinks...Please be aware that it could be chilly during winter months up there! You can sit outside on deck enjoying amazing views of the estuary, but children are not allowed in this area. Outside on your own patch of Dyfi foreshore there is a fire pit and picnic table. (This is a private area but not enclosed or screened off). Please look at the photographs to give a better idea of what the Boy John holds in store... The boat can sleep 2 adults & 2 children, if the following sleeping arrangements work for you: The main stern cabin has a small double/queen bed (foam mattress). There are two narrow single cushioned benches in the living space (approx 185cm long and 65cm wide) which can be used for sleeping on by children or the petite! The wheelhouse day bed can be pulled out to make another small double/queen bed (185cms long, so shorter than a normal bed). It can be used by more people eg if hired as a communal space along with camping pitches.  Please contact us if you want to check on capacity... The Boy John is unique accommodation, perfect for lovers of nature and rustic nautical adventure! Discounted rates for weekend breaks (3 nights) or mid week breaks (4 nights), and 7 day prices are available, please contact us directly.. An unique spot on the stunning mid Wales coast... ...offering group accommodation, camping and glamping in a working boatyard with an exceptional location. This small, friendly boatyard on the Dyfi estuary, is located at an old slate works and quay in the Snowdonia National Park. The boatyard is run by Geoff, Ben, John & Liz with the boats moved and launched by boat builder Giles Thaxton. We have a slipway and boat hoist, moorings & hard standing for smaller boats, our own stretch of estuary foreshore, toilets, showers, washing up facilities, camping, glamping boats and holiday cottages. Located 3 miles upriver from Aberdyfi and on the A493. Camping - Along a coastal footpath, a hundred meters from the boatyard, three individual camping pitches on the Dyfi’s banks, tucked beneath the tree line and separated by greenery, provide the ultimate waterside location. Nearby attractions

Aberdyfi is three miles away. It's a charming, colourful little fishing village with a few good eateries and a big sandy beach. It's a 10 minute drive to Machynlleth, a larger market town with independent shops along the high street. Smugglers Cove looks across the water to RSPB Ynys-hir (01654 700222), the location for much of the BBC's Springwatch series and the Dyfi Osprey Project (01654 781414), nearby, is particularly interesting. It is one of only two breeding locations for Ospreys in the UK with a walkway and hide for observing. Of course, by far the two biggest things here are heading into vast Snowdonia National Park (01766 770274) to walk, hike, bike and explore or to go boating on the estuary directly from the boatyard. If you need a little tution try Dyfi Yacht Club (01654 767607) in Aberdyfi where there is sailing, kayaking, kitesurfing and more.

Food and drink

Cook on the firepit provided or if you're after something a little more speedy then the local towns of Aberdyfi & Machynlleth have a range of good eateries specialising in Welsh cuisine, fish and seafood etc. with a great deli in each.  There is even a Michelin starred restaurant on the other side of the river!
