An eco-friendly campsite with a shepherd’s hut near the Ceredigion coast

Ffosygrafel Isaf Campsite offers you a place to pitch up within the Dyfi Biosphere; a protected, wildlife-rich area of West Wales. Peat bogs, broadleaf woodlands and the marine environment are all part of what makes this area special. And you can not only discover them but help to protect them by staying at Ffosygrafel Isaf. This eco-friendly site for tents, campervans and shepherd hut stays offers low-impact holidays on a smallholding that’s part of a woodland regeneration scheme. You’ll be asked to tread lightly – and those who will like it here the most wouldn’t have it any other way. Your care will be rewarded with a pretty place to stay that’s half an hour’s walk off the Wales Coast Path, three miles from the nearest beach and four miles from seaside Aberystwyth.

There are just eight off-grid camping pitches in the site’s car-free camping field with three hardstanding pitches for campervans, slightly more tucked away and surrounded by sycamore trees. Facilities are suitably sustainable with water for your shower coming from a private source and energy from solar power. The toilets are composting ones and the washing-up is done in a roundhouse that was built with local wood. It doubles as an undercover space to hang out in with a book swap, board games and seating. There’s a communal campfire area outside too. Notably there are no bins for rubbish and recycling. Guests are asked to leave no trace of their stay and that includes taking rubbish away.

The shepherd’s hut, like the roundhouse, was handbuilt by your hosts with largely reclaimed materials and great care – not just for the environment but for the guest experience too. It’s tucked away with its own shower and loo just outside. Indoors, it has a made-up bed, a kitchenette and a wood-burning stove. Whether you choose the hut or a pitch as your base, you’ll be well set for a holiday in which to explore what’s so special about this part of Wales between the Cambrian Mountains and the sea off the Ceredigion coast.

Camping Pitch 2

100% (2)
Tent pitch · Sleeps 6
Level circular pitch measuring 12-15m in diameter, making plenty of room for 1-2 tents. Surrounded by a combination of native saplings and shrubs, planted in 2022/23 with many donated by the Woodland Trust. They comprise: hazel; silver and downy birch; rowan; dogwood; dog rose; oak; crab apple and alder. On arrival, we ask you to park your car in the car park and use one of the trolleys / wheel-barrows provided to ferry your camping equipment and whatever else you need to your camping pitch (this will be between 50m and 80m away depending on where you choose to camp). This makes for a safer, more tranquil camping experience for all and ensures the best level of protection for our wildflowers and newly planted trees. Unfortunately, we can't allow fires on the camping pitches, but non-disposable barbeques are welcomed and there is a communal fire pit (with hand-made seating!). Once completed, the roundhouse will offer a basic camp kitchen (washing-up area with hot water) and an undercover communal area with charging points for phones and other electronic devices. There's no wi-fi and limited phone reception on site, but we do get full 4G signal in an area in the field above the campsite.

Shepherd's Hut

100% (1)
Shepherd's hut · Sleeps 3 · 1 bed
Our shepherd's hut has been lovingly hand-built and comes complete with a word burning stove and everything you'll need for a comfortable stay. It is designed for 2 people to sleep in the double bed and this will be most comfortable. There is the facility to covert the dining area in to an extra bed, we would only really recommend this for kids. In colder periods, the woodburner will be stocked with ample firewood, kindling and starter equipment for the duration of your stay. The hut houses a well-equipped small kitchen, with the following provided or available: sink, kettle, toaster, small fridge with ice-making facilities, 2-ring gas hob, tea-towels, towels, washing up liquid, teas and coffees, cutlery, pots and pans

We pride ourselves on being an environmentally friendly site with low impact tourism at it's core. Our facilities are hand built using local and reclaimed materials powered by renewable energy. Find us in beautiful mid Wales, close to the sea and the hills. On site we have two solar powered showers, three compost toilets with handwashing basins, a timber framed roundhouse with washing up facilities and charging points. You are welcome to bring your non disposable barbeques however we ask you to use the communal fire pit for you campfire experience (no fires allowed on the pitches). Our site has eight circular pitches for tents (max 6 people per pitch) and three hard standing pitches for campervans (sorry no large motorhomes or caravans due to access limitations). Also on site is a shepherd's hut handcrafted by the owners for a little more luxury. It has it's own spiral shower and compost loo. Well behaved dogs are allowed on the campsite but not in the shepherd's hut. There is a car parking area next to the campsite with trolleys provided to ferry your camping stuff to your pitch.Borth beach and Ynyslas sand dunes and nature reserve are just 3 miles away and the popular Clarach beach is 2.5 miles. You can reach the Wales coastal path by foot in half an hour. Other local attractions include the Dyfi Osprey Project, the bustling market town of Machynlleth (15 miles), Corris Craft Centre, the Vale of Rheidol Steam Railway, Bwlch Nant yr Arian red kite feeding centre and visitor centre. Aberystwyth town (3 miles) has a castle, thriving arts centre, cliff railway with camera obscura at the top, shops, restaurants etc.
Nearby attractions

Ffosygrafel Isaf Campsite is a couple of miles inland from the coast of West Wales. You can walk to the Wales Coast Path in about half an hour and drive to the closest beaches at Borth (three miles) and Clarach Bay (four miles) in a few minutes. It’s not much further to the seaside town of Aberystwyth where there’s lots to do. There’s a clifftop railway that whizzes you up (or down if you’ve walked here on the coast path) to (or from) the top of Constitution Hill from where there are great views and a Victorian camera obscura. There’s a seaside prom and pier and plenty of shops and eateries too. You can also hop aboard a heritage train on the Vale of Rheidol Steam Railway for a ride to Devil’s Bridge Falls on the edge of the Cambrian Mountains. By car, from the campsite, it’s 15 miles. If you travel there this way, you might like to stop off at Bwlch Nant Yr Arian (11 miles) for a woodland walk and to see the red kites at the feeding station there. The Dyfi Osprey Project at the Dyfi Wildlife Centre is another place for bird lovers (11 miles) on the edge of Snowdonia National Park. RSPB Ynys Hir (nine miles) is even closer and there’s a visitor centre for the Dyfi Nature Reserve at Ynyslas Sand Dunes too (six miles from site). Machynlleth (14 miles) is a market town that’s worth a visit with Corris Craft Centre and Corris Caverns a bit further in the same direction.

Food and drink

If you don’t fancy cooking on site, the closest place to head to for a meal out is Rhydypennau (two miles) where there’s a cafe, Pennau Craft and Coffee Shop, which does good breakfasts and a pub, The Rhydypennau Inn, for lunches and dinners. Borth is not much further and offers the usual array of seaside options for ice creams, fish and chips and more but there’s also Libanus 1877, a restored old cinema with a bar and restaurant that does good food. Aberystwyth (five miles) has a bit of a reputation as a foodie destination and there are lots of cafes and eateries to choose from. Try Ultracomida for a Welsh take on tapas. There are also lots of independent shops if you want to stock up and cook for yourself on site – plus a twice monthly farmer’s market.
