Cosy modern glamping pods with private hot tubs, located in the Brecon Beacons National Park

It's almost fitting that Delyth and Bryan established their glamping site in the midst of a global pandemic. Isolation is the word here. Roads get narrower and narrower as you near their working hill farm in the north west of the Brecon Beacons, finishing with a rumble over a cattle grid and a mile of single-lane road so quiet that moss grows down the middle. Remote, rugged and wild, this is one of the least explored areas of the national park but, once here, it's hard to see why you'd want to go anywhere else. After all, a bit of peace and quiet is probably what you came for. And there's a hot tub with your name on it that has views back down the valley through which you drove and a stunningly starry location within Brecon’s Dark Sky Reserve.

Opened in 2020, Glamping Pod Wales is home to just two curved log structures, built from locally sourced materials and insulated with British wool. Inside they feature en-suite shower rooms, a modern kitchenette (think hobs, microwave, sink, Delonghi kettle and toaster) and a separate bedroom space. French doors lead on to a deck, while, to the side, is your private hot tub and also a fenced-off garden area with a stone-built barbecue. Grab a good book, sit back in the reclining sun-loungers and take in the view that earned each pod its name – the 100-year-old Scots pine in the foreground and the oak wood atop a grassy bank.

Eventually the view will draw you out. And there are plenty of places to explore. The empty lanes are ideal for cycling and you can hire mountain bikes on site or get off-road in the woods around nearby Usk Reservoir, where there's a way-marked green route that's family friendly. For walkers, meanwhile, there's a footpath, north of the farm, that also leads over to the reservoir but for big views it's worth driving to the Llyn Y Fan Fach car park, four miles away, and climbing up to the glacial lake and the dramatic Bannau Sir Gaer ridgeline. On the clearest days you can see all the way to the Bristol Channel, as well as across to Pen Y Fan, the tallest peak in the national park and a 40-minute drive away if you fancy hiking that too.

A little isolation, then, in places like this, is certainly a good thing. No cars, no street lights, no noise. Mountains and lakes make good neighbours, and bikes and boots make good play things. Visit during spring and you could even find that lambing season provides some extra entertainment, particularly if you're staying here with young children. You might even get away with supervising from the comfort of the hot tub.

If you are looking for a short stay, a romantic get away or a family peaceful break in the tranquil countryside, then Pine Lodge and Oak View are the ideal base. Both our luxurious glamping pods are built from locally sourced materials and fully insulated with British Sheep Wool. At the foot of the Black Mountains in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park you will find a perfect private glamping site based on a working beef and sheep farm with breathtaking views all around. Relax in the luxurious private hot tubs and enjoy the dark sky reserve. The Brecon Beacons is only the 5th destination in the world to be granted International Dark Sky Reserve status. Both glamping pods have French doors that lead out onto your own private balcony where you can relax and enjoy the total peace and tranquillity. Delyth and Bryan Price looking forward to welcoming you and we always make sure your stay with us is perfect. Both properties have been graded under the Quality Assurance scheme and have been awarded 4 stars.
Nearby attractions

If you’re in to walking then you’re within easy reach of the peaks of the Western Beacons, also known as the Carmarthenshire Fans or the Black Mountain (not to be confused with the Black Mountains in the east of the national park). For a popular route, you can walk the five miles from Glamping Pods Wales to the glacial lake, Llyn Y Fan Fach, or drive 15 minutes to the Llyn Y Fan Fach car park and enjoy the best bit of the hike from there – up to the lake and along the dramatic Bannau Sir Gaer ridge behind (part of the long-distance Beacons Way). For more of the Beacons Way (there’s some 99 miles in total) try the 10-mile stretch from Llangadog station to 13th-century Carreg Cennen Castle (01558 822291), where walkers are rewarded with a good tea room. If you don’t see enough birdlife on your walks, it’s a mile and a half from Glamping Pods Wales to Llanddeusant Red Kite Feeding Station where you can watch the remarkable birds, once close to extinction, compete for food provided by this successful protection programme (£5 for adults, £3 for children). For other spectacles, it’s half an hour to Dan-yr-Ogof National Showcaves (01639 730284) – a 10-mile-long cave system complete with impressive stalactites and the chance to stand behind a 40-foot underground waterfall, as well as other attractions such as dinosaur models, an Iron Age village and a children’s play area. Just east of the glamping site, the woods around Usk Reservoir (about a 20-minute drive) offer good walks and mountain-biking loops for families, while the reservoir itself is said to be one of the best still water trout fisheries in Wales (all brown tout must be returned).

Food and drink

The charm of the isolated location does mean there aren’t any pubs within easy walking distance but there are loads to choose from in nearby Llandovery and Llandeilo (20 minutes and 30 minutes by car respectively). Enjoy seasonal, locally sourced food set in the grade II listed Georgian building of The Cawdor in Llandeilo (01558 823500). Or cosy up next to a log fire at the White Horse Inn (01558 822424) – perfect for real ale enthusiasts. There are plenty of takeaways too, so call ahead for collection and then retreat back to your pod for your own private dining. Smaller Llangadog is marginally closer (just under 20 minutes) for picking up supplies from the mini-supermarket and butchers. It also has a pleasant pub with Glamorgan ales on tap – the Goose and Cuckoo (01550 777359).
