Secluded almost wild camping spots in an ancient woodland in the Cotswolds

There’s not much to separate the experience you’ll have at Voltaire’s Wood from wild camping – but the things that exist are important. Firstly there’s the friendly permission of the owners. Secondly, there’s water and logs supplied and, finally, there’s a compost loo on site. This dog-friendly, wild woodland campsite in the Cotswolds offers five, private sites in a 120-acre wood. Book one, start your campfire, and settle in for a weekend surrounded by nature.

The pitches (or private campsites) here are set in clearings between trees, far enough apart that you may not see anyone from outside your group for the duration of your stay. Each is at least a five-minute walk from the car park and – apart from a couple which can accommodate a campervan or two – are accessible with a 4x4 only. If you don’t have one, fear not, your hosts can ferry your gear to and fro but those who will enjoy this place the most are probably self sufficient anyway. They’ll be the type to pack light and get the flint striker out to have the fire going in minutes. For this, there’s a fire pit at each site.

Each pitch also has a rain shelter, benches and access to a compost loo. Water is supplied in 20-litre containers and replenished daily – or on demand. This is properly off-grid camping in the woods and the delight is in the isolation of it all. Your closest neighbours are woodland birds and creatures and you might find yourself reluctant to leave them for the duration of your stay. Should you want or need to, however,  it’s less than a mile to the nearest pub and less than two to the nearest town. This is the Cotswolds so there’s plenty to see and do that’s perfectly civilised and all rather lovely but if you want to go wild in the Cotswolds, stay right here.

Butterfly Glide

Tent pitch · Sleeps 20
Butterfly Glide is a quiet and expansive space centred around an A-frame hub designed to facilitate chilled out social gatherings or calm parties of up to 20 people. Located deep in our woods, it is off-grid, semi-wild, and simple by design. This camp is ideal for day-parties, family gatherings and intimate special events and other organised activities. The firepit forms the social core of the space, ringed by seating and open sky. There are hammocks to swing in, space for tents nearby, and the freedom to shape the area to suit your gathering: a feast, a ritual, or a night of music around the flames. Nearby there is a stream that runs into a magnificent valley - a cathedral of beech trees - and plateaus of wild flowers. By booking Butterfly Glide you'll secure yourself the most magnificent section of our woodland. It comes with a wonderful A-frame equipped with firepits, grill and kettle, pots and pans, benches, tables, full stock of firewood, washing up facilities, private compost loo and night lighting. And a gathering circle in a ring of trees for evenings under the stars. There's even a small stage. We charge a flat fee of £500.00 for the use of the camp over a weekend or for day hire. This includes 5 acres of private space, firewood, water, help with set-up and an on-call manager for your group. This covers parking and portering and camping. Included in the fee below are two adults for the weekend. Additional adults are £25 for the weekend, children half price £12.50. These can be booked via Hipcamp. However, if you are unsure of numbers, you can also pay directly on arrival.

Little Camp

Tent pitch · Sleeps 12
The camp is in an alley of ancient trees - chestnut and yew. There’s space to run about or lounge about. Go explore the lightening struck beech or find your way to the stream that emerges from under the roots of a tree. The camp is also a short walk down to the local pub, The Weighbridge Inn. The large A-frame forms the core of this space, with bench seating around a central firepit with a grill and kettle and an off-grid sink nearby. It is best suited to weekending family groups of six or more (maximum 12 people) who can park their cars a few steps up from the campsite and who are looking for a base to explore the Cotswolds. We charge a flat fee of £250.00 for the use of the camp over a weekend, either day hire or over weekend. This includes 2 acres of private space, firewood, water, help with set-up and an on-call manager for your group. This covers parking and portering and camping. The price below includes two adults. You can either book in extra guests directly below or pay on arrival: £25 per adult, £12.50 for children.

Nearby attractions

If the 120 acres of woodland does not contain enough trees to keep you entertained, head for Westonbirt and The National Arboretum, which is just eight miles away. This is the Cotswolds, so there are plenty of picturesque villages to explore too on walks, bike rides and scenic drives. A traffic-free route from nearby Nailsworth uses the route of the old Midland Railway to take you five miles to Stonehouse. Minchinhampton Common and Rodborough Common are nearby National Trust lands with scenic views of the Cotswold’s rolling scenery, Stroud and the Severn Vale. They are home to ancient earthworks, wild flowers and grasslands.

Food and drink

The Weighbridge Inn is the closest pub to site (less than a mile) and if you fancy a meal out, don’t miss their two-in-one pies which combine a pastry-topped pie with a healthy dose of cauliflower cheese! The Bell Inn at Avening is also nearby, just over a mile away in the village of Avening. A little further in the other direction, is the town of Nailsworth where you will find plenty of eateries and shops for campsite supplies too. Don’t miss Hobbs House Bakery or the fancy William’s Food Hall where there’s a deli counter and fishmongers as well as a seafood restaurant.
