A charming Dorset campsite overlooking the Stour Valley and a short walk from both the river and the market town of Wimborne Minster

Sheltered by trees and perched on a hill just outside the pretty market town of Wimborne, Farrs Meadow is a rural camping gem with a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. It’s a perfect choice for anyone looking for a touch of wilderness that’s not too far from civilization.

The campsite is small and delightfully car-free, with a quad bike available to carry your tent and belongings to your pitch. Quirky showers have been imaginatively installed in upcycled old horseboxes, which are deceptively spacious and the perfect setting to listen to nature’s chorus whilst taking your morning shower. More horseboxes dotted around the campsite host compost loos, and the washing-up area makes ingenious use of disused cattle troughs, converted into long, deep metal sinks. Those looking for a bit of extra comfort can choose to stay in a yurt or the tastefully converted stable – both of which are comfortably furnished with a double bed, two single beds, fire pits and outdoor furniture.

The main field is enclosed by beautiful mature trees that give dappled shade in the sun and shelter in the rain. During the day buzzards circle overhead and in the surrounding woodland you can hear the drill of the woodpecker, while at night bats emerge from the trees and dart between the tents, feasting on moths that are attracted by the campfire and torchlight, and the long grass emits an ‘LED-like’ glow from the glow worms. 

Wimborne is only a 15-minute walk away from the site, worth visiting for the famous Minster of St Cuthberga, one of the finest churches in Dorset; and it’s just a short stroll down the hill to the picturesque meandering River Stour, where you enjoy a wild swim under the Eye Bridge with just brown trout to keep you company.  Wander a little further to try your hand at catching them, with fishing permits sold on site for angling both in the Stour and also in the adjoining River Allen, a celebrated chalk stream for fly-fishing. When evening descends, however, you’ll find the best policy is just to settle down on one of the giant logs encircling the campfire in the main meadow and toast a marshmallow or two on the open flames. And if the weather doesn’t agree, then fear not – it’s a 10-minute walk to one of the coolest little pubs around, the National Trust-owned Vine Inn – a unique Dorset bolthole with a tiny bar that seems to encapsulate everything that’s great about camping here: a small, independent place ensconced in beautiful countryside.

Don't worry about hauling your tent up the hill, we can take it up for you, just ask! We have Eco Loos and hot showers which are housed in upcycled horse boxes. The campsite also lies on the National Cycle Network, Route 25. A selection of great routes can be followed by those wishing to explore the area by bicycle .We can also arrange fly fishing on one of Dorset's finest and most private chalk streams, the River Allen, on the Deans Court's beat.  Course fishing can be arranged on the River Stour, again on the private banks of Deans Court Estate.

We loved it. The meadow is beautiful and during our week in May we awoke to the sound of cookoos every morning - joy. We were in the smaller Yurt which was really warm and comfortable. David was really available and bought us wood for the fire when we needed. Classic camping and a wonderful escape from the city! Thanks David.

This was one of the best campsites we've been to (2 adults, 8yo kid, dog, all seasoned campers). The site itself was gorgeous and the nearby river was great for kayaking and swimming. Lots of space for kids to run wild and short walks through woods and fields into Wimborne and Pamphill. David was relaxed and approachable and helped with everything from recommending walking routes to locating a lost charger. The loos were in great condition even on the busiest days and the little alcove with fridges and kettle was a nice touch (I even had a visit from a deer while sitting down there with a coffee one damp morning) Even after 8 nights we were sorry to leave and will definitely stay again.

The host was great, really friendly and accommodating. The pitches were a good size and located on top of a hill, meaning we didn’t get flooded in the rain and had good exposure to the sun. Plenty of toilet facilities (remember loo roll!). If you have a car with low ground clearance, be super careful on the way up. It’s a good spot for kayaking, really close to the river. 4G coverage Isn’t amazing, but works in case you need to get online. Shared facilities with fridges and a kettle are on site too. Would come again!

We absolutely loved coming to Farrs Meadow, it’s an absolutely stunning campsite. We saw endless bugs and butterflies, chickens and goats which was great entertainment for my little one. Will be back!

Lovely campsite with warm showers, washing up and clean compostable toilets. David helped us get everything to the pitch (and even rescued the AA driver whose van got stuck in the mud when he came to fix my car!) It was our second wonderful stay there, we will be back.

Too many dogs running around the site without their owners supervision. The basic amenities were ok except for unclean trough for washing up in - people had left lots of food in it. Really small doorway into the horse box loos.

Unfortunately we were disappointed with Farrs Meadow. We are fans of simple camping and enjoying nature and the outdoors, that said this camp site is extremely basic. Our main grip was other camper’s dogs that ran around the entire field with no leads, doing their business which wasn’t picked up, and wandering in other people’s tents. We don’t have a dog but saw that the site stipulated that well behaved dogs kept on a lead could come which is fine by us but that rule wasn’t obeyed. Our children and others were playing and having to avoid dog poo. The loos in old horse boxes were fun - unless you were over 5’5 then you will bump your head getting in and out. The meadow is lovely with pretty views and great little walks.

Such a lovely stay! We camped in the Meadow Pitch which gave us some stunning views and loads of space. The land was everything we needed, peace and quiet and only a short walk to the local river and the pub. David couldn't have been more helpful, always on hand for whatever we needed and a really great host.

David's land is full of quirkiness and surprise, with lovely countryside views all around and David was really helpful and informative. We had plenty of space on our pitch and campsite was kept clean and had all we needed including fridges and freezers to store items in the hot weather. The kids loved exploring the wooded area and wandering around the site. We all enjoyed a paddle in the nearby river on our last day.

A lovely raised field not accessible to cars, makes for an idyllic camping spot. David is most helpful and friendly, 4x4ing your camping equipment to the field. This is basic camping walking distance from the charming town of Wimborne. I would visit again!

David was great! Really helpful with tons of local knowledge. The field was great - nice and flat with a bit of tree cover if you want. I liked the ingenious use of the converted horse boxes as loos and showers. Peaceful and natural with nice walks and places to explore.

This was a lovely caravan. Really comfy for my kids (4&7) and me and my wife both <5ft6. Those around the 6ft mark might find the bed a little restrictive. The caravan came with lots of necessary stuff pots pans cooker, gas etc (as advertised). This is also a lovely pitch and the view over the hills was great. Of additional note were the hens which came visiting in the morning- a great hit with the kids. We would come again. Of note.. If your car is lowered you may have issues entering the site as it is up a very steep potholed track.

Nice little campsite in a fantastic location near a river for swimming in warm weather. Lovely walks to Wimborne and a couple of lovely country pubs. We found we didn't need the car for the weekend, which was a bonus. All cars are left at Reception and that makes the campsite even more peaceful and relaxing. We did find the WC and shower facilities quite basic, but was fine for a long weekend. And I would suggest to alert campers that need to BYO toilet roll when they sent out directions to find the place.

Overall we had a nice time and enjoy wild camping. However the price we paid was far too much as the facilities are very basic.

A beautiful spot set to camp amongst the long grass in the meadow. Rustic but effective compost toilets and showers in old horse boxes made a nice change to the usual toilet blocks. Fridges and freezers available. Staff all super helpful when you arrive and very useful lift of equipment up to the site which is set on a small hill, as cars aren't allowed on the meadow. Would definitely recommend to others. Lovely walk to the local (rustic) pub through adjoining meadows and down to the river. Great farm shop with lovely ice-creams just five minutes drive from site!

Lovely campground and brilliant hosts! The meadow for the pitches was perfect, lots of space and great for games. The toilets and showers are in horse boxes, which are super cute. So handy having help taking your gear up and down to the pitches, along with fridges and freezers for use. Perfect location for exploring the coast, river and surrounding town of Wimborne. Would definitely recommend, a tremendous stay with a host of activities for all!

great site with easy walk into Wimborne. Toilets and showers in old horse boxes added to the ‘cool’ vibe. David was a fantastic host and nothing seemed to much effort. The kids loved the kittens, goats and chickens as well as being able to play and roam with ease. Would recommend!

My daughter and I had a fabulous weekend at Farrs Meadow. David is super friendly and extremely helpful. The site is clean, sympathetic to the environment and is in a perfect location for walks and river swimming. The yurt was also really comfortable and we had everything we needed. We will definitely be back!

We had a great time camping at Farr's Meadow. David the host is always on hand if you need him and very friendly. The site is very dog friendly, if your dog is well behaved can run free which is lovely to see all the dogs having just as good a time as the adults The camp site is within walking distance to pubs and shops and also has a lovely river within a 5 mins walk where you can swim or use your paddle boards and so on. We will be back next year!

Quirky and fun camping!

Dorset Gypsy Caravan- Green
We camped in a green gypsy caravan. Slept so soundly during our stay in our cosy home. My son found friends to play with and animals to pet. We went swimming in the crystal clear river and enjoyed visiting local attractions from this base. The site is extremely chilled out with its quirky loos and showers. Overall a fab time was had by both of us!

David has a beautiful, tranquil campsite close to a fabulous wild swimming spot and quiet country lanes to explore on foot or, as we did, by bike. At the top of a hill, up which he'll transport your stuff in his 4x4, we pitched our tent by the trees which provided welcome morning shade and lovely views. David was full of local ideas, so much so that we are definitely going back to explore all that we missed! A perfect mix of rustic charm and all the help and advice you could want if and when you need it.

A lovely friendly campsite, loved the real ‘back to nature’ feel with no electric or Wi-Fi and ingenious use of old horse boxes for the composting toilets and shower facilities. Kids (range of ages in our group from 6-9) had a great time and were able to explore independently and safely. They loved seeing the chickens, goats and kittens! Relaxed feel, quiet (not too busy the week we were there) and great access to the Purbeck peninsula - Corfe Castle, beaches etc

Perched on a hill and surrounded by woodland, Farrs Meadow looks out across the Stour Valley. The site is a few minutes walk by footpath to the River Stour where campers can swim and fish. The pretty Vine pub, in the thatched hamlet of Pamphill, is a short stroll across the fields and it is only a 15-minute walk to Wimborne Town centre, with all its facilities and visitor attractions.
Nearby attractions

The campsite overlooks the Stour Valley and the river is a mere 5 minutes walk from Farr's Meadow. The Stour offers some of the best wild swimming in England, perfect for whiling a day away. Farr's Meadow offer fly fishing and course fishing on the Stour and the River Allen (guides optional). Some of the best beaches in Dorset are within 20 minutes drive. There are plenty of great marked bicycle routes nearby and National Trust walking routes border the campsite. For the rainy days Wimborne, with its famous Minster (01202 884753), is a 10 minute walk away, while Kingston Lacy (01202 883402) and Badbury Rings are a 10 minute drive. Further afield Bournemouth and Poole make for popular day trips, while the Jurassic Coast is just over 45 minutes in the car.

Food and drink

A much loved favourite pub for lunch or supper is The Anchor in Shapwick a ten minute drive  (01258 857269) booking is advised. On the way to The Anchor you pass Barford Farm where they make the most delicious ice cream which is well worth the visit. The most local pub, The Vine Inn (01202 882259), is less than a 10 minute walk across the fields and is owned by the National Trust, supposedly boasting the smallest public bar in the country. Pamphill Dairy is a twenty minute walk away, there you will find a lovely cafe serving delicious food and a well stocked shop for groceries. In Wimborne, you'll find a good selection of restaurants and pubs including the child-friendly Olive Branch (01202 884686), Number 9 (01202 887557) and The Tickled Pig (01202 886778). There's also a Waitrose and Co-op supermarket.
