A yurt, a gypsy wagon, and wild camping pitches in a Devon valley.

Campsite Aldridge Mill is deep in the Devon countryside and offers a taste of a wild Nomadic life to anyone who’s passing through. There are camping pitches for people with their own tent or van, and there’s a yurt and a bow-top gypsy wagon too. But please don’t call these options glamping. Your hosts are keen to point out that what you get here are not stays in purpose-built accommodation but the opportunity for an off-grid holiday in an authentic Mongolian yurt and a genuine gypsy wagon. Both have character and history that you can’t erase or replicate. And the same could be said for the land they sit in. This peaceful site is situated among the untamed meadows, streams, and woodland of an ancient Devonshire valley, a few miles south of Exmoor.

The yurt was, in fact, once lived in by your hosts so it is homely and exceptionally well equipped. It has a log burner and a kitchenette, as well as a double bed and double futon too. It’s suitable for up to four and sits in its own meadow, with a private compost loo and green valley views, among the 40-plus acres belonging to Aldridge Mill. Likewise the gypsy wagon, which sleeps two. It's also located in its own space with its own loo and views. Elsewhere within the land is the wild camping field. Here, only a handful of campers are allowed at a time – perhaps three or four tents or vans. There are a couple of compost loos but little else by way of facilities. If you want to wash or wash-up, you do so in the stream (strictly eco-friendly products only), your water is filtered from a well and the lighting (at the yurt and wagon) is powered by the sun.

In many aspects this is as close to wild camping as you can get which won’t suit campers who are used to manicured sites – but those who see beauty in long grass and notice stars on dark nights will probably love it here. You can use the place as a launchpad to explore Exmoor National Park and further afield in Devon or simply stay local to enjoy what’s close by. The campsite is situated between the villages of Oakford and Stoodleigh which each have a pub that does food. The towns of Bampton, Tiverton and Dulverton are all within 10 miles.

Wild Camping by stream

96% (12)
Motorhome/tent pitch · Sleeps 4 · Vehicles under 13 ft
Our camping field is bordered by the very pretty iron mill stream on the northern side and ancient broadleaf woodland to the east and south. It has basic amenities with a double compost loo and fresh drinking water filled from the well at the mill. The stream is easily accessible with plenty of stony beaches for wild self cleansing and for collecting water for washing up. Please note that you can only use totally natural products near the waterways, and should not use any products when in the stream. There is a central fire pit and campers are also welcome to have their own small well tended fires. We ask that you try to have fires in previous burn spots as much as possible . You can buy seasoned firewood from us for your own fires or to use at the central fire. (please don't take wood from the woods) We only offer a very limited number of camping spots at any time to preserve the tranquility for everyone. If you are looking for your own secluded wilder spot we can direct you to some suitable camps further down stream or deeper into the woods. We have a wild, wonderful and varied 41 acres so hopefully you can find what you are looking for here! If you are a group of friends or family looking for a bit more of a private gathering we can cater for up to ten tents extra at The Yurt. We recommend hiring the yurt space between the group. This would give you the yurt, which sleeps four and has its own solar power and fridge in addition to your own private hilltop area, with fire pit, toilet, water source and parking area.

Yurt with stunning views

100% (3)
Yurt · Sleeps 5
Our beautiful 6m yurt is situated with stunning views across a magical valley. The yurt was our home so it is very authentic, homely and comfortable. There is a generous double bed with feather duvet and pillows and high quality cotton sheets. There is also a double sofa bed and double futon and we can be very adaptable to your needs. The kitchen is fully equipped with a four ring gas hob, grill and oven. You also have a fridge with a small freezer compartment. We aim to look after the wild and wonderful nature around us in all that we do and the yurt is totally off grid. Being off grid definitely means a more unique and hopefully more rewarding holiday experience. There is a compost loo just outside the yurt .This is next to your stored water for drinking and cleaning which is collected from our well down at the old mill. There is a small re-chargeable shower unit which you can use for a nice outdoor shower with water warmed by the sun or on the hob. Or the beautiful streams which surround us provide great wild freshening options! Please note that you can only use totally natural products near the waterways. There is solar power to the yurt providing plenty of pretty lighting and enough power for basic things ….but its a good to remember this is off grid and only has limited power. At night you can sit out around an open fire or if its a bit wet or chilly there is a cosy wood burner inside. We can provide you with wood for the fire which you can book in advance or ask for when you arrive. Please be aware we definitely do not class this as glamping. This was our home and will be an authentic off grid experience. It is a real mongolian yurt with years of love. Its history is written in the stains on the canvas! We will always be here to welcome you and there will always be someone at hand or by the telephone if you need anything during your stay.

A very very cute original bow top wagon lovingly restored and decorated to give a real gypsy feel. Beau can be found hidden by our magical woodland, with an incredible view of the valley around you. Its lush to lie in the bed with the open window to see if you can spot any of the wildlife surrounding you. There is a small fire pit to cosy up around at night, with hand crafted wooden benches for your use only. You can buy well seasoned logs directly from us (or pre book them) It is designed for 2 with a comfy double bed, topped with feather duvets and pillows... dressed in quality cotton sheets. There is a double gas hob & grill and a well equipped kitchen. Beau has ample storage for all your luggage and food. The power all comes from our fiery sun and is adequate for charging phones/tablet (or small laptop) and running the thoughtfully considered lighting. We aim to look after the wonderful natural world around us in all that we do here. We ourselves are off grid and all the toilets at the mill are composting loos. Beau has its own toilet, just a short walk away. 10L of filtered well water will be there on your arrival, and you can refill these from the water point in the nearby campsite. There are streams all around which provide great freshening and cleaning options. Please note you can only use totally natural products beside the waterways (nothing in them!). There is no shower or running water in Beau. Please be aware we definitely do not class this as glamping. This will be an authentic off grid experience in beautiful surroundings. We will always be here to welcome you and there will always be someone at hand or by the telephone if you need anything during your stay.

Aldridge Mill is an old working mill that finished grinding corn in the 1930’s. It is nestled deep in a sheltered valley accessed by windy lanes from the A361 which travels across the top of mid Devon. We are very blessed by the nature surrounding us. It is timeless and untouched, full of the beauty and charm of England. The valley is heavily wooded and criss crossed by waterways, with walks for every level of adventure and plenty of hidden wild dipping spots. We are situated between two small villages, Oakford and Stoodleigh which each have a lovely local pub. There are plenty of charming villages all within easy reach and with many good food options all around. The small town of Bampton is 4 miles away with independent cafes, butchers, bakers and a great local fresh produce shop. Exmoor and the river Exe are just above us and we are perfectly placed to be able to explore the sandy surf beaches in the west, the jurassic coast to the south and the wild north Devon coast above us.
Nearby attractions

Aldridge Mill is situated in more than 40 acres which campers are welcome to explore for walks and wild swimming. You can walk on public footpaths out into the surrounding countryside. The village of Oakford is less than two miles away, the village of Stoodleigh is just under three and the small, historic town of Bampton is four miles from site. The edge of Exmoor National Park is about five miles to the north with the gateway town of Dulverton (seven miles) a good place to start an adventure as it’s home to a National Park Centre. Walking, cycling and horse riding are popular things to do and there are stables at West Anstey from where you can go pony trekking on the moor. Alternatively, you can drive right across to reach the Exmoor coast at Porlock, Bossington or Lynton (all within 30 miles; about an hour’s drive). The south coast of Devon at Exmouth and the west coast beaches at Westward Ho! and Appledore are a similar distance. Closer to home, Tiverton is within 10 miles of the site – and home to Tiverton Castle and the Tiverton Canal Co who will take you on a horse-drawn barge trip on the canal that passes through town.

Food and drink

There are two pubs within three miles of Aldridge Mill campsite and you can walk to either if you enjoy a walk. The Red Lion in Oakford is closest with The Stoodleigh Inn a little further, both do food. There are more options in Bampton (four miles) where you’ll also find the closest shops. For a meal out, perhaps head for The Bridge House or Spelt. There are also a number of cafes, independent shops and small grocery stores. For a supermarket, head to Tiverton (nine miles).
