Luxury pod glamping on the edge of the Peak District National Park

There's probably a philosophical debate to be had about when camping becomes glamping and when glamping stops being camping at all — and the set-up at the luxurious Lambs Glamping, on the edge of the Peak District, inserts itself squarely into the argument. Yes, these are glamorous camping pods, set on a mown field backed by shady woods and with horses on the neighbouring pastureland. There are only two pods, fairly close to each other but with lots of space and light, and a short drive away is one of the country's finest national parks.

So far, so camping and glamping. But hello, what's this? The whole front of the pod is glass, with double doors that open out onto a flag-stoned patio. The interior is centrally heated — yes, you heard right — and there's enough space to swing many cats in varied directions. When you get over the shock at being able to stand up straight and tall, unlike in many pods, you'll also notice that the decor has its own touch of glam about it, from a coordinated colour scheme to acres of painted and polished wood. Beds are solid and eminently sleep-able — the bunks are particularly flash, like a train sleeper-carriage — and there's a fully fitted and equipped kitchen that, though small, wouldn't look out of place in a showroom. By the time you clock the neat, hotel-style bathroom with its power shower, the wall-mounted TV, and the temperature control, you've pretty much moved beyond the whole concept of 'camping' in any of its guises. These are flash rooms in anyone's book — they just happen to be in stylish pods in a field and if you want to call it camping or glamping, that's entirely up to you.

There's little else on site, but you have the whole of the Peak District National Park unfolding just a couple of miles to the west. If you're into hiking or biking, you can reach even the further-flung, rugged attractions of Castleton, the Hope Valley, and Mam Tor in 30 to 40 minutes by car, though plenty of other trails are much closer. And with accommodation like this, a downpour or other dodgy weather isn't going to spoil the day — forget trying to dry out in a damp tent or yurt when you have a pod with a heated towel rail to come back to. Probably more in keeping with your status as a very glamorous camper are genteel days out at Chatsworth — just ten minutes down the road — or the 20-mile run out to the refined old spa town of Buxton.

Enjoy the true feel of nature, combined with the comfort and glamour of these pods. Located in the beautiful countryside, on the edge of the Peak District. Experience beautiful outreaching views right from your doorway, while situated alongside a woodland surrounded by nature. This is the place for the full glamping experience. Our fully equipped glamping pods include:A kitchen which includes a microwave oven, kettle, hob, toaster, fridge / freezer, pots, pans, cutlery and cooking utensils. A deluxe built in bathroom with a nice, hot and powerful shower.Sleeping for up to 6 by means of 1 bunk bed, 1 double bed and 1 double sofa bed.TV and dining areaOutside seating area and patioWe are 2 brothers who started the site in 2015, originally as a campsite and ran it for 5 years. Then at the end of 2020, for a few various reasons, we decided to give glamping a go and managed to make a start at renting out the pods in August 2021. We started with 2 with the plans of building a third.
Nearby attractions

There are a few footpaths surrounding the site, with the nicest local walk being the 45 minutes or so to Linacre Reservoir, which runs via the Royal Oak pub at Old Brampton, if you need a stop on the way there or back. Otherwise, Chatsworth House (01246 565300) is the big local day out and it's an absolute treat — home to the grand Devonshire family and one of England's most magnificent stately homes and gardens. It's only five miles away to the west and it's an all-day visit, with everything from house tours and landscaped grounds to farmyard, woodland playground, estate farm shop, and several places to eat and drink.

The nearest market town is Chesterfield, five miles east, with its famous crooked spire on the Church of St Mary and All Saints (01246 206506) – climb it if you dare! The town's handsome enough, with quite a bit of historic interest, but in truth most day trips from the site are going to be to the west, where the gorgeous Peak District National Park (01629 816558) rolls across the peaks, crags, and moors between Sheffield and Manchester. For a bit more landed gentry grandeur, Haddon Hall (01629 812855) – about 11 miles away, beyond Chatsworth — is considered the most perfect example in England of a house surviving from medieval times, and there are intriguing tours of the house and parkland. Pretty, traditional Peak District villages like Bakewell get overrun in summer, so maybe think about running up to Eyam in the Hope Valley, about eight miles away. Known as the 'Plague Village', after the locals isolated themselves during the 17th-century plague outbreaks, it's at the heart of some excellent walking country.

Food and drink

You can easily walk to the local Fox & Goose pub (01246 566335) in about ten minutes or so — it's on the cheerily named Pudding Pie Hill, which has extensive rural views, and there's a bar menu served all day (though currently weekends only). Also walkable is the Royal Oak (01246 568092), a quiet village pub in Old Brampton, which serves straightforward food daily. If you're going to jump in the car, then the Peacock at Barlow (01142 890340) is the best target, another place with sweeping countryside views. It's a revamped local, nicely done, and with a decent menu and half a dozen real ales. It's about six miles away, a 15-minute drive. Head west into the Peak District proper and there are any number of cutesy villages with old pubs and yesteryear cafes. It's only a 20-minute drive to Bakewell, for example, and the cafe at the Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop (01629 812193), where you-know-what takes centre stage — they've been serving it here since 1860.

For special occasions, there's only one choice hereabouts, and you'll need to book. Fischer's at Baslow Hall (01246 583259) has been wowing diners for years, with its fine-dining country-house restaurant — gorgeous in summer when the doors open out onto the gardens, but lovely at any time of the year for sensational set meals and tasting menus. It's a quick ten minutes in the car from Lambs Glamping.
