The Bays is a small shaded area off Koala Place where camper vans, Kombi vans or rooftop campers can set up. This is the only place available for those sleeping in vehicles; you can use all the facilities on-site. No tents or swags are to be camped in this area, they must remain in the campground.
We loved our time at Meleleuca Surfside Backpackers and could not recommend it more. The facilities were super clean, easily accessible and very well equipped with anything you could need. Even during the busy easter weekend we found that the facilities could easily accomodate everyone and the campsite didn't feel overcrowded at all! The location is super convenient with only a 5 minute walk to One Mile Beach and a 10 minute drive to supermarkets and shopping complexes, but still pleasantly isolated and a lovely place to relax. We were also super impressed with the sustainable principles implemented at the campsite to keep it clean and protect the natural wildlife and environment. We will be back for sure!
Great property and hosts. Almost didn’t feel like camping with all the amenities that are available. Close to every shop you would need and the beach is across the road. Plenty of friendly wildlife around and great scenery. Will be coming back
Absolutely loved the campsite! It was very beautiful and amenities were really nice as well. Only downside is the owner's dogs woke me up at 12 midnight barking. Would be ideal if they kept their dogs inside at night to prevent that.
Beautiful campsite, nice and clean facilities and less than 10 minute walk to the beach. But the camping was ruined by the roosters they keep there, they start early and go all day its quite annoying and hard to sleep.
Our overall experience at the camp was okay, but several aspects left us disappointed. The lighting throughout the campsite could be improved navigating after dark wasn’t easy. One of the biggest issues was the lack of clear communication regarding rooftop tent restrictions. We weren’t advised in advance that tents weren't allowed in those areas, and although the staff managed to accommodate us eventually, it was incredibly frustrating to be made to feel like it was our mistake upon arrival.
Another major concern was the number of dogs running loose around the site. At one point, dogs were actually in our campsite and left messes. Shower facilities were limited as well, leading to long queues during peak hours.
While the staff did assist us, their attitude often came across as patronising and condescending rather than genuinely helpful. With clearer information, better facilities, and a more respectful tone from staff, this could have been a much more enjoyable stay.
A beautiful flat grass campground with all the amenities for a comfortable camp - hot showers, flush toilets, kitchen. Plenty of space to spread out and welcoming/friendly owners.
I went there with 9 other people. The location is stunning: it has a sort of "jungle" vibe which really makes you feel out of the world. The facilities are amazing: toilet, huge kitchen and dining with every tool you may need. More than a campsite, it felt like being in an Airbnb and sleeping in a tent in the garden! Really 10/10, top value for the price we paid.
The owners were super helpful and chill too. They allowed us to check out later than the 1030 allowed by just saying "of course mate, it's Sunday, take it easy" :)
Really really recommended!
wasn’t like the pictures and was dirty there was chickens and dogs everywhere and they were very loud all hours of the night. the host weren’t welcoming and me and my partner felt uncomfortable so due to this won’t be staying here again
On arrival the dogs welcomed us with open paws. We loved being able to pitch the rooftent amongst the trees. The bathroom facilities were very clean and common area kitchen relaxed and inviting. A unique location.
Absolutely beautiful part of the world. Just minutes away from One Mile Beach and just a quick drive to Anna Bay shops. Super convenient location. Loved the shady spots and palm trees on the property. Owners are friendly and welcoming, and it was a pleasure to deal with. Will come back.
Never again at this place!
We have requested in advance to Mike (that presented himself as the owner), to help us stay together with our friends (as we were in a Van, and our friends in a tent). They never return our messages, and when we arrive, they mention that tents and Vans could not stay together, because of safety.
We found a spot where we could stay together safely, but Mike was VERY RUDE and didn’t accept our request. We request to cancel, but he told us that we could only handle it thru the website (clearly he was not helping us at anything).
In addition they have dogs in their property, and this 2 dogs made a mess with our bin and also when we were mounting and unmounting our tent…
Toilets not always clean..
When was our last day, because he put us far from our friends, we took longer to handle all the stuff to unmount our friends tent, and was also raining to help :(. When the rain stopped we started running to leave on time, and Mike started to accelerate us to move our Van out. His behavior is really what drives this place down…
There are other nice places in the same region, with nice hosts, eager to support guests..
Honestly, this place is a nightmare! Don’t waste your time there…
This is a perfect camping spot. All of the amenities that you could want, hot clean showers and toilets, huge kitchen with everything you would need (pots, pans, cups, plate, cutlery, coffee sugar etc… even has a fridge to keep food cold. We’ve camped a lot and haven’t come across a place that has more to offer than this place. The staff are friendly and there is so much space for the kids to run around. The beach is a 2 min bike ride with a cafe. Close proximity to shops and Nelson Bay. We are so glad we found this place and will definitely be back.
It's a lovely site but beware the hoons on the nearby roads at midnight, the rooster crowing at 3:45am, and the manager's kleptomaniac dog that isn't trained to poo away from the campsite pathways.
Amazing facilities and camp grounds. Toilet block and main building was clean and full of cooking utensils. Owner of the site was friendly and knowledgeable. Would recommend to anyone
I had a lovely stay here in the car camping section. Peaceful site, great amenities and a short walk to the beach. I really liked the communal kitchen and verandah area which had a lovely relaxed vibe. I would definitely stay here again
Melaleuca was a peaceful, shady, and comfortable campsite with clean, quality facilities and camp kitchen. We even saw a koala in the wild which was pretty special. Highly recommend.
Absolutely perfect camping holiday. The grounds are gorgeous. Plenty of private leafy nooks to set up camp away from others. The facilities are modern and always clean. Walking distance to the beach and only a couple minutes’ drive to the shops.
We will definitely be back!
We loved camping here! Such a beautiful spot, close to some amazing beaches. The share facilities were super clean & communal kitchen area was great, plenty of kitchenware, washing up supplies and prep space. We also really enjoy the comfy couches and communal eating space too! The camp site was not overcrowded which meant that we felt like we had our own space, would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a chill camping ground with facilities.
This was my first hipcamp and was absolutely perfect.
It’s exactly as described - heaps of space, you just choose a (nice shady) spot, peaceful with the most disturbance from the chooks or a cheeky possum, and fab facilities.
The bathrooms are very clean and well maintained and the double kitchen has all the utensils, crockery, cutlery etc you could need as well as a big fridge and bbq. There is also a good supply of games and spots to sit and read if you hit a patch of weather (which I did). There are also some good big carts to help you take your stuff from the car park to your site. Less than 5 min walk but nice to make only 1 trip instead of 4!
It’s an easy walk to the patrolled beach where there’s a cafe ( not tested but looked popular). Mick provided a thorough intro to the camp and the local attractions and was on hand to help with any issues.
Exceptional value for money. We really enjoyed our stay camping here. The kitchen and bathrooms were really clean and we appreciated that there was a large fridge for campers to store food. We took bikes and it was a perfect base to ride to the local beaches, as well as Fingal and Shoal Bay via the National Park. We’ll be back!
Hidden gem, one of a kind, beautiful, green and spacious, 5 min walk to patrolled beach, max 15 min drive to anywhere, fresh, clean amenities and owners Mick and Michelle are really lovely. You’ll normally find me in a national park but we loved this so much we extended by two days and will come back once a year. FIVE STARS!!!
It's a great location, lots of trees and close to the beach, but is pretty run down and toilets/ showers weren't cleaned for 3 days during the busiest Xmas-new year period.
